Summary[]
At the Anthonn Gremminger Traveling Troupe, Julia tries to find Kamille, calling out to her and looking around. Eventually she sees and asks Dotty if she's seen Kamille, who confirms she has, claiming Kamille got on an earlier bus home. Julia, feeling sad and abandoned, takes the last bus home.
Julia wakes up the next morning excited to get to work and give Kamille her birthday present. She has a short conversation with her father, Paul Lazarrett, before he leaves for work, specifically to return three Ah'kon (which Paul refers to as "Three Eyes") to the Aspett Research center. Paul then asks his daughter what time she got home, and Julia admits she came home late because she went to the circus.
Julia leaves home for work with the birthday gift for Kamille, expecting to find her at their local bus stop, but she isn't there. On the bus, Julia convinces herself Kamille must have overslept, but once she's at work, Julia realizes something is wrong.
Julia arrives home later that day and bumps into Mrs. Bernaud, Kamille's mother. It turns out, Julia was expecting to find Kamille with her mother at home, while Mrs. Bernaud expected Kamille to be with Julia. Mrs. Bernaud suggests that Kamille might have run away with a man, and this leads to Julia realizing that she might have run away with the circus. Julia immediately hops on her bike and rushes to catch up with the Anthonn Gremminger Traveling Troupe before they leave town.
Once she's caught up with the circus, Julia calls out to Dotty and Bob while they drive the circus. Distracted, Julia's bike falls off a cliff and the circus runs her over. She then wakes up and finds herself in another world of pastel colors and repeating patters.
